This article proposes a study of the traditions in defensive architecture that concurred in the projects designed by Spanish military engineers for the fortification of the Valencian frontier in 1648 and 1649, in the context of the War of Catalonia (1640-1652). For this it is essential to follow the route of the Valencian adaptations to the military revolution in the matter of fortifications throughout the sixteenth century and compare them with those brought to Valencia in 1641 by the Marquis of Leganes and his engineers from the school of Milan.

Tra la seconda metà del XIX sec. e l’inizio del XX sec. in Europa si assiste alla progressiva distruzione dei sistemi difensivi delle città, in quanto, oramai, considerati inutili ingombri rispetto ai motivi che li avevano originati. Delle fortificazioni delle città, solamente alcuni elementi furono conservati, come, ad esempio le porte urbiche e alcune torri. Between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth, the changes in the military technology - mainly related to the spread of firearms - implied a re-elaboration of the fortification construction theories and, consequently, a practical experimentation aimed at the identification of architectural models capable to make the border areas safe and impregnable. Far from involving only a small circle of "men of arms", the debate about the “new art of the war” involved men whose formation can not be traced back to a specific type.
